When my guests are planning their trip one of the top requests for information is where to buy local fish to prepare in their villa or condo. There is nothing like fresh Caribbean fish. Most menus on island feature Wahoo and Dradu. Dradu if I am not mistaken is Mahi Mahi. I prefer it to Wahoo which can be firmer in texture.
Some of my favorite places to buy fish are as follows:
Doei Diaz
J.A Abraham Boulevard
next to Richard’s Restaurant
Doei is the Dad to windsurf guru Elvis Martinus. Head over around 3 PM and ask for fresh fish. It’s usually sold in bags with steaks vs filets. The building is pink.
Luis Wijman (also known as Junie)
Kaya Gutu, Antriol
Turn left on the paved road, Kaya Karpitan, just south of Progresso Supermarket in Antriol. Turn right on the second road on your right, Kaya Purunchi. Then take the second left, Kaya Gutu, it’s the second house on the left hand side of the road.
Nilo and Luvia Josephia
Kaminda Lac (the winding road to Sorobon)
The second to last house on the right on the road to Lac Bay/Sorobon. If you come to the ballfield you went too far so go back. The house is brown and there is a sign “aki ta bende piska”. The blackboard and open gate indicate when they have fish.
Fish Marinade Recipe
fresh lime juice
fresh thyme
Garlic minced
EVOO
Pelican Reef is on sale for the weeks of March 3-11. Due to a cancellation I can offer a 15% discount on this superb beachfront bungalow.
Pelican Reef is a real beach house, ideally located on the fringes of Playa Lechi on the water’s edge The center of Kralendijk, Bonaire’s main village, is a short15 minute walk away, as are most of the activities as well as the main restaurants.
The house itself, lovingly tucked away in lush tropical greenery, would be best described as casual and intimate. The interior is comfortable and simple: island style with colonial accents and an occasional splash of Caribbean color.
Being a private residence, the house is equipped with all amenities and comfort you could wish for during your stay:
There are two bedrooms, both have twin beds. The bedrooms are equipped with A/C and ceiling fans. White 100% cotton bed linen, cozy throws, and cushions. The rooms have screens, but additional mosquito nets are also available should they be needed.
The comfortable bathroom has a large step-in shower. In the cupboard you will find plenty of white towels for indoor use and colorful beach towels for outdoors. There is also an outdoor shower.
The kitchen is fully equipped with cooking stove, microwave, large fridge and freezer, coffee-maker, blender, toaster, and all necessary glassware, dishes, cutlery, cooking and frying pans. Picnic equipment and coolers are also available.
Outside you will find our barbeque, feel free to use it! Furthermore there are quite some lanterns to turn our beach area into a real fairy-tale decor.
Pelican Reef is all about easy outdoor living: a constant airy breeze provides the perfect temperature. The spacious porch offers plenty of shade, there is a nice sundeck with loungers, deck chairs, and a hammock. Our swim dock allows you to slip straight into the turquoise Caribbean Sea!
But the main feature is without any doubt the peace and quiet this house has to offer… with your own private beach to enjoy fantastic sunsets and starry moonlit skies.
And for those guests who have difficulty detaching from the “real” world, there is TV and DVD, stereo, a cell phone at your disposal (calls to be paid), wireless Internet access, a growing library with books, magazines, DVD and board games. Kindly email ann@bonairecaribbean.com for details.
Patrice Rannou has been serving fine French cuisine for 7 years now. Some of my special clients and friends were treated to a multi course private tasting menu. Enjoy some photos courtesy of Timmmy Bonaire, my guest photographer. Patrice is a true gentlemen providing one of Bonaire’s finest dining experiences. My clients love Bistro de Paris. Of course I am a fan mostly for his desserts. The tarte tartin is ambrosial.
Bistro de Paris is moving soon so watch for news and updates. For updates call 011 599 717 7070 or let the your Concierge at Caribbean Wind & Sun Vacations book your dining experience.

Imagine your own oceanfront oasis complete with hammock, tropical gardens, lovely furnishings and complete amenities for an island escape. Villa Ganshi is my newest property and she shines. The gentle trade winds blow through the open air residence. The owners had comfort in mind when they designed and decorated this escape. Enjoy diving or snorkeling in your front yard. Walk to my favorite French restaurant, Bistro de Paris or if you prefer, Argentinian steak at Patagonia. Town is a 15 minute walk along the seaside promenade.

One of my favorite lunch spots is Kontiki Bonaire. The setting is serene on the southeast coast of Bonaire. Kontiki is nestled at the bottom of windy Lac Bay. This is windsurf paradise. My daughter and I dined recently. John, the waiter is amazing. We had lovely cold slushy drinks, amazing food and views that were striking. The steady trades cooled our dining experience. I love the Dutch Kibbling, fried fresh local fish in an amazing batter. Love Kontiki in Bonaire.
Jibe City has a large stock of 2012 windsurf gear rigged and ready. Bonaire has been experiencing their best steady winds of the year with the average sail size being 5.5 for men and 4.2-4.7 for women. It’s been a great holiday windsurf season so far. With brand spanking new year, it’s time to book your windsurf vacation.
I recently demoed an amazing 99 liter JP Freestyle board. The graphics were cool but more important this is a sweet board. This light weight super wide board was a breeze to sail during a high chop session. I teamed the board up with a 4.9 Neil Pryde Fusion. It was a light sail with plenty of low end power to get up to a plane quickly. I didn’t full appreciate the sail as the wind conditions were a bit gusty but feel this HD version sail.
Jibe City is staffed by a tight cohesive group of dedicated professionals available to rig and caddy your gear, lend some gear advice or to offer lessons to hone your skills. Jibe City is the official site of Andy Brandt’s ABK Boardsports School. On site is Hang Out bar serving refreshing drinks and libations as well as healthy and delicious food treats.

Look for a more detailed gear review in next week’s blog post. Bon Anja, Happy New Year from Bonaire!
Lola and Andrea have moved their restaurant down the street on the waterfront in Bonaire. My favorite meal is lunch. Kate, Marguerite and I went on a Wed. and had a glorious meal. Marguerite chose the Antipasto, Kate chose the pasta Carbonara (Lola calls it breakfast pasta with egg and parma ham) and I had the fish soup. Lola served freshly baked bread and small salads. Once the meals arrived we settled in with a bottle Torresela Pinot Grigio. My soup was delicious with a savory salty broth and bits of fresh local tuna and wahoo as well as imported shrimp and mussels.
After our entrees, Kate tempted us with the notion of sharing a Tiramisu. It’s not something I typically order but thank goodness I heeded her advice. The massive portion of creamy coffee delight was pure ambrosia. We fought over the last spoon.
Capriccio’s serves lunch 5 days a week and presently dinner 7 days a week. They also feature a lovely boutique complete with fine wines, pastas, sauces and delicious treats.

4.2 Gun Sail 85 liter Chango
The Christmas trades returned after months of no wind in Bonaire. I have a 4.2 2005 Gun Sail that’s rigged and ready for special occasions. I cannot think of a better occasion than when it’s gusting past 30. With my 85 liter Angulo Chango I was ready for day 2 of survival sailing. The chop in the bay was pretty intense and the gusts making for full on overpowered conditions. I prevailed and had another amazing windsurf session today.
Kontiki is spotlighting a special Christmas menu Dec. 24-26. The decadent menu includes a choice of five hot and col appetizers, 5 entrees including a vegetarian item and lovely desserts including Tiramisu. Appetizers are 11-16 USD including Tower of Salmon, entrees are 20-30 USD including rack of lamb and desserts 10-16 USD.
To reserve your table call the Concierge specialists at Caribbean Wind & Sun Vacations 011 599 786 3134 or email ann@bonairecaribbean.com
