On Saturday, January 21, 2012, volunteers gathered at Dive Friends Bonaire at Yellow Submarine to participate in the first quarterly Clean Up Dive of the year. The weather was perfect and the turnout was fantastic. A large number of resident divers attended, as well as guests of Dive Friends Bonaire and a surprising amount of customers from other dive centers on the island. The dive community of Bonaire proved once again how much they care about their marine environment.
The CIEE Research Station Bonaire will present their next public lecture this Wednesday evening, January 25th, 2012, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and Bonaire’s own Ramon de Leon, manager of the Bonaire National Marine Park, will be presenting the lecture.

Our last check on Bonaire’s tagged sea turtles had Jklynn being outfitted with her transmitter, as mentioned in a previous story. On December 11, 2011, satellite signals indicated that she had started her migration home in a northerly direction.
The underwater cleanups have become very popular activities, with over 100 participants joining in together on each event to keep Bonaire beautiful. As such, there is another cleanup scheduled to take place at Karel’s Beach Bar Pier on Saturday, January 21, 2012.
Bonaire’s Special Olympics Walk-a-Thon will mark its tenth anniversary this year. The ever popular 34 kilometer event starts at the White Slave Huts and finishes in Rincon, with all proceeds going to the local chapter of the Special Olympics and everyone is invited to participate.
It’s clear to all that Bonaire’s economy is driven by tourism. Both cruise and diving tourists provide employment and income for the people of the island. Of course, the activities of these tourists have an impact on our island, which can be both positive as well as negative. In addition to increased employment and income, a positive aspect includes a liveliness on the island and the possibilities for doing business that translate into economic growth for Bonaire. However, the impact on nature and the noise and congestion in and around Kralendijk can be negative aspects of tourism. Therefore, a new research project was launched last week to measure the overall effectiveness and the positive and negative aspects of tourism.
The 2011/2012 winter season brought the second annual Kaminda di Arte to Bonaire for its residents and visitors. The Art Tour is held the third Sunday of each month, now through March, 2012, and includes many of the island’s galleries or ateliers showcasing anything from fine art through craft items made with items found on Bonaire’s shorelines.
The Bonaire Insider has just learned that Insel Air must unfortunately immediately discontinue the Wednesday flight from Charlotte, North Carolina (USA) to Bonaire, with a connection in Curacao, beginning with tomorrow’s flight, January 18th, 2012.
Dutch Antilles Express (DAE) will re-introduce flights between Bonaire and Curacao on February 3, 2012 on a fully renovated ATR-42. The flight will operate three times daily with connections to other DAE destinations. DAE also announced the intention to expand the destinations to which they fly and to increase their fleet later this year.
The island of Bonaire has swept top honors once again, receiving four #1 ratings, which is more than any other destination scored in the Caribbean/Atlantic category, while continuing its reign as one of the top diving destinations. For the tenth consecutive year, Bonaire has taken first place for Best Overall Dive Destination and island for Best Shore Diving.
As always, Washington Slagbaai National Park will be closed on Sunday, January 1st, and will re-open for entry on Monday, January 2nd, when a new fee structure will be introduced.
